Gas prices are increasing

The State Government recently announced an increase in gas tariffs.

The cost of supplying gas to the end customer increased significantly in the last few years and a recent report by the Office of Energy found existing gas tariffs did not reflect the true costs of supplying gas.

In addition, the State Government also agreed that for 2009-10 only there should be a further small increase in gas tariffs to recover a portion of the additional costs that were incurred by Alinta in maintaining gas supplies following the explosion at the Varanus Island gas processing facility.

As a result, from 1 July 2009, gas tariffs will increase as outlined in the table overleaf.

The tariff increase will mean that a typical household, who previously paid around $390 per year for gas will now pay an additional $1.70 per week.

The Office of Energy's report outlining the reasons for the increases is available at www.energy.wa.gov.au.
