Choose a Hot Water System to Suit Your Lifestyle

Your hot water system doesn't have to use lot of energy. You just need to choose the right system and consider the upfront purchase price, installation costs and the long-term running costs.

There are two main types of hot water systems you can choose from:

Continuous Flow (or "Instantaneous") Systems:

  • Fit into tight spaces, which is ideal if you are short of space around your home.
  • Heat water as you use it, so you won't run out of hot water.
  • May give you less water pressure when more than one tap is running, say when you have a shower and washing machine in use at the same time. This is becoming less of an issue with newer model systems.

Storage Systems:

  • Offer good water pressure, as hot water is stored in an insulated tank and supplied at mains pressure
  • Need the correct sized tank to avoid temporarily running out of hot water or heating more water than your household needs
  • Take up a larger space than continuous system types.

What Type of Hot Water System Suits Your Home?

When choosing a hot water system, you should consider:

  • The number of people (and bathrooms) in your household and the number of showers, baths and loads of washing to take into account
  • Whether your hot water needs are likely to change over the next decade (e.g. young children may soon be teenagers using more hot water)
  • The space available for your hot water system to be installed
  • Your budget for the total cost including installation and any additional plumbing or electrical work that may be required

Which of these statements best describes your household?

"My household uses a bit of hot water."

If you're a light user and live in an apartment or townhouse, a continuous system would be best. It may carry a slightly higher upfront cost, but can be fitted into a tight space. To fuel your system, gas costs less and emits less harmful gases than electricity.

"My house is probably average when it comes to hot water usage"

A storage system, or larger continuous system, is probably best if you would like to use more than once tap or hot water appliance at the same time. Again, gas is the most cost efficient and energy efficient way to fuel your system.

A solar system with a gas booster could be right for you, as the larger upfront costs would be balanced by lower running costs over the life of your system. A rebate of between $500 and $700 is available from the Western Australian government.

"We use a LOT of hot water!"

With the amount of hot water you are using, your ongoing energy costs will be high, so a high efficiency, large capacity gas storage system would be a good choice. If you are a very heavy user you may even consider installing two systems. Gas would be the most cost effective and environmentally friendly way to fuel the large amounts of water required for your system.
